Répétition et incarnation dans l’énonciation

Résumé

Pourquoi répéter ? Répéter, c’est ne pas dire autrement, et ce faisant rendre les signes strictement non substituables. Le maintien des signifiants redonne aux signes leur « corps ». Les mots privés de corps sont interchangeables, les signes redevenus entiers voient au contraire se décupler leur potentialités sémantiques et pragmatiques et peuvent assumer d’autres fonctions que celle de représentation. Fonctions expressive, poétique et métalinguistique, bien sûr, mais aussi ludique, humoristique, rituelle, performative… Nous posons que la répétition met au jour l’existence de deux modes de signifier pour le signe biface : d’une part la signification ou mode du signifié (les signes y sont substituables et sont donnés et reçus comme arbitraires), d’autre part la signifiance ou mode du signifiant (les signes y sont non-substituables et sont donnés et reçus comme motivés). Nous illustrons notre thèse de la signifiance incarnée de la répétition au moyen de la figure de la réduplication, que nous définissons comme geste verbo-vocal, à mi-chemin entre parole et geste. Nous montrons ensuite comment la triplication (répétition égale ou supérieure à trois) peut faire glisser la parole vers le chant et assumer une function incantatoire.

Resumen

The Embodied Significance of Repetition. Why repeat? To repeat is to choose not to say in another way. It is to take the signifiers out of their transparency, and thus return them their “body”. Why? Words deprived of body are interchangeable, they are tools which are used above all to transmit information. Signs that have body become whole again, see their semantic and pragmatic potential increased many fold. Repetition allows signs to assume other functions than that of representation: expressive and poetic, but also playful, humorous, ritual, performative, etc. Repetition is the modality of the embodied sign. We pose the need to distinguish two modes of signifying for the sign: either the signification (mode of the signified, the signs are substitutable, and that is why they are given and received as arbitrary), or what we call signifiance (mode of the signifier, the signs are not substitutable, they are given and received as motivated). We illustrate our thesis of the embodied modality of repetition by means of the figure of reduplication, a universal phenomenon, and show how repetition can assume a performative function.
